Egg Experiment on air pressure with bottle and egg for a science project

INTRODUCTION

In this topic, we are going to perform egg experiment that shows you how to get an egg inside the waste plastic bottle at home for your science project or exhibitions with the air pressure law(egg in bottle gas law)

This homemade egg science experiment(also called a magic egg experiment) for the science fair is done using a waste plastic bottle, a boiled egg which is easily available at home at low cost.

How to get an egg in a bottle?

Egg in the bottle experiment

Air pressure experiment works with a plastic bottle and a boiled egg( Gay-Lussac’s Law).

First, place an egg in a saucepan and add water so that it is covered.

Let water boil for about 5 minutes, then remove pan and cover it.

Let the water fully cool down and then remove the egg from cold water.

Peel the egg and dip it in water and set it with the small end down in the mouth of the plastic bottle.

The egg should be bit larger than the mouth of the bottle so it doesn’t fit inside.

Use a matchbox to light up the strip of paper on fire, lift the egg from the mouth of the bottle, drop the burning paper inside the plastic bottle and quickly replace the egg.

You will observe that boiled egg will wiggle a little in the bottle mouth and it gets sucked inside.

Egg in a bottle experiment observation and procedure

First, when the egg is boiled it has changed from running egg white to a soft solid.

When the first egg was set on the plastic bottle, the pressure inside and outside matched, so nothing happened.

When you dropped the burning paper inside the bottle it caused the air inside to get heated up and eventually expand rapidly.

Now expanding air pushed egg aside and escaped from bottle hence egg vibrated.

As the fire consumed all the oxygen inside the bottle, the flame went out and remaining air in the bottle cooled down.

Here cool air takes up less space resulting in less pressure inside the bottle.

Finally, resulted in an unbalanced force where the force of the air pushing on the egg from outside the bottle was greater than the force of the air pushing up on it from inside the bottle.

Hence egg was pushed inside the plastic bottle.

Questions & Answers on Egg Experiments

1. What is an example of air pressure?

Sea-level air pressure is an example of air pressure.

2. Is high air pressure cold or hot?

High-pressure systems contain cooler air, air mass is more dense and flows towards areas that are warm or moist.

3. How does altitude affect air pressure?

Pressure decreases with higher altitude.

4. Does air have volume yes or no?

Yes, air has volume.

Conclusions
