How To Make Revolt of 1857 Working Model – Science & History Exhibition

Good morning everyone.
Today I am going to explain my history exhibition project on the “Revolt of 1857.” This DIY working model represents the first major uprising against British rule in India. The Revolt of 1857 is also known as:

  • The First War of Indian Independence
  • Sepoy Mutiny
  • Indian Rebellion of 1857

This revolt was an important event in Indian history because it united soldiers, kings, queens, farmers, and common people against British rule.

The project shows the important centers of revolt and the leaders who played a major role in the freedom struggle.

Aim of the Project

The main aim of this project is:

  • To explain the Revolt of 1857
  • To show the important centers of rebellion
  • To introduce the great leaders of the revolt
  • To spread awareness about India’s freedom struggle

Explanation of the Working Model

In the center of the model, we can see the map of India with marked locations showing the important revolt centers.

The left side of the model displays the key centers of revolt:

  • Delhi
  • Meerut
  • Lucknow
  • Kanpur
  • Jhansi
  • Gwalior
  • Bareilly
  • Arrah
  • Jagdishpur

The right side shows the important leaders of the revolt:

  • Bahadur Shah Zafar
  • Nana Saheb
  • Rani Lakshmi Bai
  • Tatya Tope
  • Kunwar Singh

The small LED lights on the map indicate the major places where the revolt took place.

Causes of the Revolt of 1857

There were several reasons behind the revolt:

1. Political Causes

The British East India Company captured many Indian kingdoms using unfair policies like the Doctrine of Lapse.

Indian rulers lost their kingdoms and power.

2. Economic Causes

Heavy taxes and exploitation affected farmers, artisans, and traders.

Indian industries were destroyed because British goods dominated the market.

3. Social and Religious Causes

Many Indians believed that the British were interfering with Indian traditions and religions.

This created dissatisfaction among people.

4. Military Causes

Indian soldiers in the British army were treated unfairly and received lower salaries.

The immediate cause of the revolt was the introduction of new rifle cartridges rumored to contain cow and pig fat, which hurt religious sentiments.

Important Centers of Revolt

Meerut

The revolt started in Meerut on 10 May 1857 when Indian soldiers rebelled against British officers.

Delhi

The rebels reached Delhi and declared Bahadur Shah Zafar as the leader of the revolt.

Delhi became the main center of the rebellion.

Kanpur

Nana Saheb led the revolt in Kanpur and strongly opposed British rule.

Jhansi

Rani Lakshmi Bai bravely fought against the British to protect her kingdom.

She became a symbol of courage and patriotism.

Lucknow

Begum Hazrat Mahal led the revolt in Lucknow and resisted British forces.

  • The British became more careful in governing India.

The revolt laid the foundation for future freedom movements.
