How to make Kidney Working Model using syringes

This is a Kidney Working Model. The syringe represents the kidney, and the sponge or cotton acts like the nephrons which filter blood.

When ‘blood’ (colored water) is pushed through the syringe, the cotton filters it and sends the clean fluid or ‘urine’ into the plastic tray, which represents the bladder. This demonstrates how our kidneys remove waste and extra water from the blood and keep us healthy.

How to Make Kidney Working Model

Step 1: Prepare the Kidney Box

  • Cut a kidney-shaped structure from cardboard and paint it red or pink.
  • Mount two syringes inside the kidney shape with glue or tape — one for blood in, and one for filtrate out.
  • Inside each syringe barrel, place a little cotton/sponge to simulate the filtration process.

Step 2: Set Up the Tray

  • Place the plastic tray below the model to act as the bladder, collecting filtered liquid (urine).

Step 3: Simulate Blood Flow

  • Mix red paint with water (to simulate blood) and fill one syringe.
  • Push the syringe slowly — water will pass through cotton and drip out clean (or slightly yellow) into the tray.
  • You can color the filtered water yellow (urine) to show waste removal.
