Neuron Structure Model

Introduction on Neuron Structure

In this topic, we are going to show you how to build a Neuron structure model for your science project or exhibitions.

Also you will get to know about neuron structure

The human brain is not a simple organ in our body, a lot many research yet to be done.

Basically, Nervous system is made up of small cell known as neurons which send and receive the information in the body in the form of chemical and electrical signals

Neuron structure and function

An electrically excitable cell which communicates with other cells through connections called synapses (also called neuron) and it is the main component of nervous tissue.

3 types of neurons and functions

There are three types of neurons which are classified based on their function.

Sensory neurons

Sensory neurons respond to stimuli such as sound, touch or light and affect cells of sensory organs and transmit the signal to the brain or spinal cord.

Motor neurons

Motor neurons receive signals from the brain and spinal cord to control muscle contraction to the glandular point

Inter-neurons

Interneurons connect neurons to other neurons within the same region of the brain or spinal cord.

Detailed parts of a neuron

A neural circuit is basically a group of connected neurons.

Neuron is made up of soma (cell body), dendrites and single axon.

Soma is compact.

Few hundred micrometers from the soma are the Dendrites.

Axon terminal function

Axon leaves the soma from axon hillock and it travels as far as 1 meter in humans or more in other species. It branches at a constant diameter.

Axon terminals are at the farthest axons branch where neuron transmits a single across synapse to another cell.

Neurons receive signals through dendrites and soma; transmit out signals down the axon.

Synapses connect axon to another axon or dendrite to another dendrite.

Questions & Answers on Neuron Structure Model

  1. What is the basic structure and function of a neuron?
The nervous system consists of specialized cells called neurons which transmit signals throughout the body. Long extensions that extend out from cell body are called dendrites and axons.
  2. What are the types of neurons?
There are four types of neurons namely: unipolar, bipolar, multipolar, and pseudounipolar. One structure extending from soma are called unipolar whereas one axon and one dendrite extending from the soma are called bipolar.
  3. What are the main parts of a neuron?
Main parts of neuron are: dendrites, axons, axon terminals and soma.
  4. Difference between nerve and neuron?
Neurons occur in the brain, spinal cord and the peripheral nerves and nerves are found in the peripheral nervous system.
  5. What is the space between two neurons called?
Space between neurons called a synapse.

Conclusions

Neurons are very imported part of the human body as it is available in the brain which controls all the parts of the body.
