INTRODUCTION
In this topic, we are going to show you how to build a Rainbow model (art and craft) for a school project for your science project or exhibitions.
Rainbow science explanation
Rainbow is caused by refraction, reflection, and dispersion of light in water droplets which results in the spectrum of light appearing in the sky.
Rainbow takes the form of a multicolored circular arc.
Rainbows which are caused by sunlight appear in the opposite direction of the sun in the sky.
Rainbows can appear as full circles however to an observer the only arc which is formed by illuminated droplets above ground is seen.
Arc has red on the outer part and violet on the inner side.
When the light gets refracted as it enters a droplet of water which in turn reflected inside on the back of the droplet and refracted again when leaving it which results in the formation of the rainbow.
This is called as primary rainbow.
The second arc is outside primary arc which has the order of its color reversed.
It is caused when light is reflected twice on the inside of the droplet before leaving it. This is called a double rainbow.
The most prominent rainbow colors that are seen by human eyes are: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet.
They are caused by airborne water like rain, mist and spray, dew.
Water drops in the air and sunlight shining from behind the observer at a low altitude angle results in a rainbow to be observed.
Different types of rainbows:
- Double rainbows
- Twinned rainbow
- Full circle rainbow
- Supernumerary rainbow.

Questions & Answers
1. What are the colors of the rainbow in order?
Rainbow is made up of seven colors namely Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange and Red.
2. What is a rainbow?
It’s an arc that gets created in sky made up of seven different colors which can be seen when sun shines through falling rain.
It is caused due to white light that is refracted when it enters a droplet of water which gets split into separate colors and gets reflected back.
3. What is the rhyme to remember the rainbow?
Richard of York Gave Battle In Vain that depicts Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet.
4. What exactly is a rainbow?
Sun’s light is refracted as it passes through raindrops in the Earth’s atmosphere.
5. Does it have to rain for a rainbow??
Yes, Rainbow indicates that a rain has just passed.
Conclusions
This science rainbow model project demonstrates to students or kids on how a rainbow forms, the concept of the rainbow, colors of the rainbow
