How to Make Pythagoras Theorem Model – DIY Maths Project

In this video, you will learn how to make a Pythagoras Theorem Model using cardboard, foam sheets, and simple craft materials. This model beautifully demonstrates the famous formula:

a² + b² = c²

We show how to construct the right-angle triangle, the squares on its sides representing a², b², and c², and how to arrange them in a neat display.

Materials Needed

  • White chart paper
  • Thick cardboard
  • Colored foam sheets (pink, yellow, blue)
  • Scale, pencil
  • Black marker
  • Glue / Fevicol / hot glue gun
  • Scissors
  • Blue border tape or blue chart strip
  • Round/rectangular cardboard base
  • Straw or stick (to hold the board)

Step-by-Step Procedure

STEP 1: Prepare the Display Board

  1. Cut a rectangular cardboard piece (approx. A4 size).
  2. Cover it using white chart paper neatly.
  3. Add a blue border around the edges using strips of colored paper or tape.

This becomes your main display board.

STEP 2: Draw the Right-Angle Triangle

  1. On the white board, lightly draw a right-angle triangle using a scale.
  2. Label the sides:
    • Smaller side → a
    • Medium side → b
    • Longest side (hypotenuse) → c

This is the triangle for the theorem.

STEP 3: Make the 3 Squares (a², b², c²)

You need three squares placed externally on each side of the triangle.

Square 1 – a² (Yellow)

  • Cut a yellow foam sheet square.
  • Draw a grid (small squares) using marker.
  • Size should represent side a.

Square 2 – b² (Blue)

  • Cut a blue foam sheet square.
  • Draw grid lines like shown in the image.
  • Size should represent side b.

Square 3 – c² (Pink)

  • Cut a pink foam sheet square.
  • This must be largest, because c² is the largest area.
  • Draw grid lines neatly.

STEP 4: Place the Squares on the Triangle

  1. Stick each square touching the corresponding side of the triangle.
  2. Orient the squares exactly like the image (slanted and neatly aligned).
  3. Ensure:
    • Yellow = a²
    • Blue = b²
    • Pink = c²

STEP 5: Add the Pythagoras Theorem Formula

On the right side of the board, write using black marker:

Formula Section

Pythagoras Theorem Formula

a² + b² = c²

Example:
6² + 8² = 10²
36 + 64 = 100

This makes your model more informative.

STEP 6: Prepare the Base

  1. Take a circular or rectangular cardboard base.
  2. Cover it using black chart/foam sheet.
  3. Attach a straw, wooden stick, or thick rolled paper tube vertically in the center (to support the board).
  4. Glue the board firmly on top of the stand.

Now your model can stand upright like the picture.

STEP 7: Final Touch-Up

  • Ensure all lines are straight.
  • Add “Pythagoras Theorem Model – DIY” title if needed.
  • Clean extra glue and pencil marks.
